Description

During the EFFESUS meeting in Glasgow in October 2014, The UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (UNESCO Venice Office) and EFFESUS agreed to arrange a joint summer school on the topic of energy efficiency in World Heritage Cities. Already in 2013, EFFESUS staff contributed as invited lecturers to a summer school arranged by UNESCO Venice office with focus on governance issues for energy management in historic cities. This experience was so positive that UNESCO later invited to a joint summer school with EFFESUS results in focus in the autumn of 2015. A delay of the event until December led to the name EFFESUS-UNESCO Winter School. The target group was managers from World Heritage Cities in Europe. In addition, a group of PhD students from various research institutions in Europe were offered seats in the school.

The school was held at the premises of UNESCO Venice office in the centre of Venice, and accommodation for the group was arranged at Venice International University campus on San Servolo. The schedule for the school was composed of lectures, several team working sessions and on-site exercises using the World Heritage site of Venice and its Lagoon, including some of its enlisted buildings, as demonstration case. The group works focused on energy efficiency measures on three levels: On governance level, on district level, and on single building level.

On the closing day of the school, the trainees presented their group works on a closing seminar with the participation of representatives of the main stakeholders of the WHS of Venice and its Lagoon. The closing seminar and farewell party was hosted by European Culture Centre, Venice.
